How do you know Which dumpster size to get?Determining the size of a dumpster needed for a project is both art and science. The science of it is that dumpster come in standardized dimensions measured by cubic yards. A cubic yard is three feet by three feet by three feet, imagine a cube in space of the size. If you have trouble visualize it think of a small mini fridge or an average sized central air conditioning air compressor to get an idea of how big that is. Now depending on what material that cubic yard is made of the weight can be drastically different. For instance, a cubic yard of concrete weighs about two tons or four thousand pounds, That's where the other part of the science of how large of a dumpster you need need comes in, and that's weight. All dumpsters have weight limits because there is a limit to how much a dumpster truck can carry, how much is safe to carry and how heavy a load driven on a public road by a dumpster truck is allowed to be. Dumpster weight limits scale with the size of the dumster, with the smallest sized dumpster, the 10 yard dumpster having the weight limit of about two tons on average and the largest, the 40 yard dumpster a weight limit of six tons on average.
The art part of determining what kind of dumpster you need is the interplay between the two factors of volume and weight as they relate to what you are putting in the dumpster. Some items like furniture have unique fixed shapes, and are heavy, so they have a limited orientational possibility. The way they are shaped limits how much can fit in a dumpster irrespective of weight, as the shape will limit how much can go in before the weight will. Very heavy items like bricks or soil are easy to orient any which way in the dumpster but can quickly exceed a weight limit. It's easy to pack a lot of it in a dumpster but the dumpster, depending on the size could become to heavy or too dangerous to move. Broadly speaking, for residential projects, if you have the space for it on your property, we suggest a 20 yard dumpster. 20 yard dumpsters are the biggest dumpsters that will fit in most driveways so you will maximize the amount of space rented, while also being able to dispose of everything from your project in one go. This size dumpster can handle the most common home renovation projects like carpet removal for pest control, garage, basement and attic cleanouts, or small remodeling demolitions. For larger projects we suggest the 30 or 40 yard dumpster especially if you have the space for them on the worksite. For very heavy debris the best choice is a 10 or 15 yard dumpster, because filling those completely will usually keep you within weight limits. |
how are dumpster rentals priced?
Dumpster rentals are priced based on volume and weight. and these are standardized (this is different than junk removal). How volume and weight are priced is where things can be different. The most common kind of pricing for a dumpster rental is a flat price. When being quoted a flat price be sure to verify what is included in that price and what kind of overages and charges there are for exceeding certain limits (every all inclusive price has terms and conditions which allow for additional charges under certain circumstances.) Dumpsters can also be priced based on how much space is taken up in a dumpster or tonnage. This kind of pricing structure can be advantageous if you you less space or have lighter debris that what it would cost for an all-inclusive dumpster of similar size. The bottom line is, whatever quote you get should always be in writing and explicitly note all charges. Common additional charges for dumpster rentals include: overweight fees, late fees, prohibited item fees, long distance charges, and charges for obtaining a dumpster permit. Some companies will even charge you for making the driver wait too long while you prepare the space for the dumpster to be placed. Here are Chelsea Dumpster Rental we have common sense pricing. What can and cannot be put in a dumpster?
Most things can be thrown away in a dumpster like all kinds of household junk, wooden furniture, brick, concrete, asphalt, gravel, construction and home improvement debris, lumber, storm debris, shingles even drywall from mold removal. That said, it's easier to talk about what cannot be put in a dumpster than what can. There are a few restrictions on what can be thrown away in a dumpster. The biggest category of prohibited debris are hazardous materials. Things like asbestos, gasoline, oil, tires, appliances, wet paint, lead acid batteries, medical waste and radioactive materials, are always prohibited in a dumpster. There is another big category of commonly found items that are sometimes not allowed in a dumpster, items commonly thought of as 'e-waste', printers, cellphones, televisions, computers and computer accessories, fax machines etc. Though these items are not hazardous in themselves, they could contain hazardous components, Besides, they can be recycled should not end up in a landfill. Mattresses and upholstered furniture are other iffy items. Just give us a call if you are not sure about an item. If you do need to remove non-hazardous, contact a commercial junk removal company, they can help with most of those items.
